The Public Adjuster

It may not be immediately clear what exactly a Public Adjuster does, or when it might be best to contact one. This confusion is compounded by the fact that some people may dismiss the importance of public adjusting entirely, as there are some situations when a public adjuster can only do so much without getting the court systems involved.
The best time to get a Public Adjuster involved is immediately after you contact your insurance company about the loss, and before their appointed adjuster contacts you for information regarding the loss. Public Adjusters are independent professionals who work only for you, the policy holder. Since they get paid out of your settlement, it is in their best interest to work with you to maximize what that settlement can be based on what your insurance covers.

Will they limit your payout?

At the end of the day, and insurance company is a business, and the way they make money is by limiting the amount of money they pay out to policy holders. To accomplish this, they have detailed and often confusing contracts that explain exactly what is and what is not covered by your policy. Because most of the policy holders don’t fully understand their coverage, they often under-claim or neglect to provide important information to the insurance company that effects the outcome of the claims process, and once the claim is processed it is difficult to get the insurance company to re-open the claim without significant outside intervention, such as from a court of law.

A Public Adjuster’s job is to sit down with you, study your policy to determine everything that is covered, and then catalog your loss including items that you may find hard to calculate. This might include lost business productivity and other nebulous numbers according to industry formulas. Once we know what is covered and what is lost, we work with you to file the claim and negotiate with your insurance company to get your claim fulfilled.

In exchange for a small portion of your final claim, a Public Adjuster will take all of the guesswork and confusing paperwork off your hands. They minimize the amount of work you have to do, and maximize your claim to take full advantage of everything about your loss your insurance covers.
A Public Adjuster is an equalizing force. They are an industry professional who’s job is to ensure your claim is the best it can be based on your coverage. They are there to help you throughout the whole process.

They only get paid when you do.

Negative marketing may focus on situations where public adjusters were not involved until later, when their aid can be limited. Negative marketing might also focus on the fees that public adjusters charge, arguing that public adjusters actually make your claims smaller. The truth of the matter is, unless you have devoted years of your life to understanding insurance policies and law, you are far better served with a Public Adjuster than without. Chances are you’ve been too busy running your business or providing for your household to have that kind of knowledge, and most major claims managed by Public Adjusters are more than large enough to justify the cost.

The best part, is most Public Adjusters (Insurance Claims Assistance included) don’t charge you up front, so they don’t get paid until you do, but they are working with and for you from day one.
